I'm pretty sure it's a source of the PAD's funding that required us to do this, but today we visited Frankfurt. No, the other one, without the airport. This Frankfurt is home to the Europa-Universität, the most international university in Germany. Its students are 25% international.

Arriving in Frankfurt. It's a pretty little town located right on the Polish border. In fact, the border lies in the middle of the Oder itself. |
The bahnhof is situated relatively high above the town, and a short wall affords a nice view of it. |
Frankfurt has not been built up much, and some ruins from the War still survive. |
The Oder River. You're looking at Poland right now. |
The building on the left is home to a couple of lecture halls and the main auditorium of the university. The building on the right, formerly a hotel, is now owned by the university as well and serves as student housing. |
The so-called "Auditorium Maximum" was in use during our tour, so we only saw some of the offices and classrooms. |
An example of one of the most modern classrooms at the university. |
This concert poster is unremarkable except that Frida Gold is performing. LOL. |
While no longer in the original building, the Europa-Universität is very, very old. This is the main facade. |
The age shows: this stained glass window dates back from the construction of the building in the 1700s. |
The only skyscraper in the city is owned (you guessed it) by the university and houses offices and classrooms. The courtyard you see here showcases both the old construction of the school and its integration with modern design. |
Some sand was gathered on the northern shore of the town for the purpose of building sand sculptures. This was my favorite. |
Looking across the river from the bridge. That's Poland on the left. |
Poland! We crossed the river illegally (well, except Hunter; he actually had his passport) and simply walked into Poland. There is seriously more border control between individual US states. |
Sadly, I didn't end up in frame (somebody who didn't know how to work my camera took the picture), but this is at any rate most of the group. |
"Kino der Toten" was my comment upon seeing this derelict theater. Houston laughed. |

Der Grenzpolizist :: Border control officer
Es gab keine Grenzpolizisten an der Grenze zwischen Polen und Frankfurt a. d. Oder.
There was no border control on hte border of Poland and Frankfurt a. d. Oder.
Now I get what you meant by saying you were actually in Poland that day. I loved the shots of the University. Cool sand sculpture too!! It's a shame you weren't in the picture of the group, but I'm just happy to see people in your photos now!! Great job!
ReplyDeleteWell, Kirk, you certainly got a bonus by stepping into Poland!! I liked your picture of the group but am sorry that you weren't in it...
